Topic--
With the current crime surge in New
Orleans —and throughout the United States—political leaders and their
constituents are voicing different views and offering strategies to make
the City “safe”. How do we balance the need for criminal justice reform
with our desire for safe streets? Will this surge in criminal
activities bring about more discussions on investing in education,
children, and community, or a concentration of suggestions and hostile
strategies based on fear and retaliation? Is there an answer: more guns,
more police, the National Guard?
Our presenter is ROSALIND BLANCO COOK –- Rosalind is a
past New Orleans Coalition president, and a native of New Orleans. She
currently holds leadership roles in the League of Women Voters / New Orleans, the American Association
of University Women and Independent Women's Organization. Rosalind previously worked in the
communications profession with emphasis on strategic planning,
coordinating, and implementing news media coverage, public relations,
employee and customer information programs and administrative processes.
During
her time with the Regional Transit Authority, she pitched story ideas
to local, national and international media outlets, which resulted in
favorable coverage in numerous print publications, such as USA Today,
the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times as well as segments
on the NBC Nightly News, the Today Show, Good Morning America, FOX News,
CBS Early Show, CNN and NPR. Rosalind worked in communications during
the mayoral administration of Marc Morial and C. Ray Nagin. She has also
taught political science courses at Tulane University, University of
New Orleans, Loyola University, Dillard University, and Xavier
University.
