United Teachers of New Orleans President Jim
Randels is our featured speaker. The United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO) is a
labor union representing teachers and other educational workers in New Orleans.
It is an affiliate of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, American Federation
of Teachers, and the AFL-CIO.
Jim Randels has been a member of United
Teachers of New Orleans (AFT Local 527) since he began teaching in January
1984. Upon joining UTNO’s Executive Council in 1999, he served as UTNO
representative to the steering committee of Community Labor United. He also is
a co-founder of Students at the Center, a writing program he co-directed with
Kalamu ya Salaam for 17 years. In 2008, Jim was elected Executive Vice
President of UTNO, and he is currently completing the term of Larry Carter, who
is now president of Louisiana Federation of Teachers.
Through these affiliations Jim participated in
developing in New Orleans Public Schools the first 21st Century Community
Learning Center grant and the first Smaller Learning Community grants, both
multi-year and multi-million dollar funding proposals.
Usually held every second Saturday of each month, the
Gillespie-Senter Memorial Community Breakfast has been a project of the First
Unitarian Universalist Church Social Justice Committee since May 1983. Our
